KNUST SRC and ASSOWK Host Summit to Celebrate World Social Work Day
On March 21st, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Students Representative Council and the Association of Students of Social Work (ASSOWK) organized an awareness summit at the Faculty of Social Sciences New Block to commemorate World Social Work Day. The event, themed "Respecting Diversity Through Joint Social Action," aimed to raise awareness about social work and promote diversity and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
The summit was attended by many individuals, including the SRC President, Master Frank Owusu, who expressed his commitment to ensuring representation for disabled students in the SRC parliament. "Disability is a part of humanity, and one way or another, we are all disabled," Owusu stated. "As an SRC, we believe we should lead the advocacy in talking about disability and diversity. All human beings are special, and beauty lies in diversity."
Several other speakers also shared their insights at the event. The President for Students with Disabilities in KNUST noted that individuals with disabilities are the best spokespersons to represent themselves because they can resonate with their plight. Prof. Esmeranda Marfo, the Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work, spoke about the need to reorient students and lecturers about persons with disabilities to create an enabling environment for their well-being.
The summit, jointly organized by the SRC, the Association of Students of Social Work, the Peer Counselors, and others, received significant attention from both internal and external media outlets, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about social work, respecting diversity, and promoting an inclusive environment. The event also provided an opportunity for attendees to network, share ideas and experiences, and engage in joint social action.
